Fixlify Appliance Services uses water pressure diagnostics and spray pattern analysis to identify dishwasher spray arm failures across Toronto. When dishes come out dirty despite a full cycle, our technicians check spray arm rotation, nozzle blockage, hub bearing wear, and system water pressure — all before recommending any part replacement. Call (437) 524-1053 for same-day dishwasher diagnosis.
TL;DR: Dirty dishes = blocked spray arm nozzles (mineral deposits), jammed rotation hub, cracked arm losing pressure, or failed circulation pump pressure. Cleaning fixes most blockage cases for free. Cracked arms cost $85–$150 CAD to replace. Fixlify diagnoses the root cause before recommending repair.
How Dishwasher Spray Arms Work
Most dishwashers have two or three spray arms: a lower arm beneath the bottom rack, an upper arm beneath the top rack, and in three-level machines, a middle arm. The circulation pump pressurizes water to 8–12 PSI and routes it through a manifold to each arm. As water exits the angled nozzles, the reaction force causes the arm to rotate — a self-propelled mechanism that requires no motor of its own.
Each arm has between 8 and 20 individual nozzle holes, typically 1.5–3 mm in diameter. When even a few holes are blocked by mineral scale or food debris, the spray pattern becomes uneven, leaving food residue on dishes in the zones covered by the blocked nozzles. When the arm stops rotating entirely due to a jammed hub bearing or physical obstruction, an entire rack may receive no cleaning action.
How to Identify a Blocked vs. Broken Spray Arm
The diagnostic distinction matters because the solutions are different. Our technician Alex M. uses the following approach:
- Blocked (cleanable): Arm spins freely by hand, but holding it up to light reveals dark or mineral-filled nozzle holes. Cleaning with vinegar soak and toothpick clears the blockage.
- Jammed hub (mechanical fault): Arm cannot rotate freely by hand due to food debris compacted in the center hub bearing. Hub is cleared and tested for bearing wear — worn bearings require full arm replacement.
- Cracked arm (replacement required): Hairline cracks along the arm body allow pressurized water to escape before reaching nozzles, reducing spray force. A cracked arm may still rotate but produces weak, misdirected spray.
- Low pressure (pump fault): Both arms spin but dishes remain dirty across all zones, indicating the circulation pump is not generating sufficient pressure. This requires pump testing, not arm replacement.
Tall utensils can physically jam spray arms mid-cycle. A spatula or long knife protruding below the bottom rack will contact the lower spray arm, stopping rotation and in some cases cracking the arm on impact. Always ensure utensils are fully seated within rack tines. If you notice an unusual noise during a cycle, stop the machine and check for obstructions before damage occurs.
Spray Arm Diagnosis Steps
Visual Nozzle and Rotation Inspection
Arms removed, nozzle holes inspected under light for blockage. Arms spun by hand to test hub bearing smoothness. Any roughness, grinding, or restricted rotation in the hub indicates mechanical wear beyond cleaning.
Crack and Structural Integrity Check
Each arm body inspected for hairline fractures along the top and underside surfaces. Cracks are often invisible when dry but can be confirmed by filling the arm with water and observing for leaks at pressure.
Water Pressure Verification at Arm Port
Technician runs a short wash cycle and places a pressure gauge at the arm supply port. Normal pressure range: 8–12 PSI. Values below 6 PSI indicate a circulation pump or filter issue rather than an arm defect.
Filter and Sump Inspection
Dishwasher filter and sump are inspected for accumulated food debris that would restrict pump inlet flow. A clogged filter is cleaned during the same visit — this alone resolves many "dirty dishes" complaints without any part replacement.
